The State Division started shedding greater than 1,300 staff on Friday as a part of a sweeping reorganization geared toward lowering waste and eliminating redundancy.

The layoffs, which started on Friday, resulted within the elimination of 1,107 civil service employee positions and 246 international service officer positions, based on inside notices obtained by a number of retailers.

In all, 1,353 positions have been eradicated on this preliminary wave, with officers signaling that that is solely the start of a bigger effort to chop as many as 3,000 jobs.

In response to a report from the New York Submit, “Workers started receiving termination notices within the morning informing them that their positions have been being ‘abolished.’”

“Headcount reductions have been fastidiously tailor-made to have an effect on non-core capabilities, duplicative or redundant workplaces,” a message despatched to the fired staffers stated.

“By afternoon, a number of laid-off staffers have been noticed tearfully departing the State Division’s headquarters. They have been met by a crowd of clapping supporters outdoors the Harry S. Truman Constructing, close to the White Home,” the Submit report continued. “Affected international service officers will likely be positioned on administrative go away for 120 days earlier than formally dropping their jobs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the layoffs will make the division “extra environment friendly and extra targeted.”

“It’s not a consequence of attempting to do away with individuals. However for those who shut the bureau, you don’t want these positions,” Rubio stated whereas talking to the press on Thursday. “Perceive that a few of these are positions which might be being eradicated, not individuals.”
