Re: “Trump shot at Pennsylvania rally” [July 14, A1]:
The necessity for American unity got here full circle on July 13. Former President Donald Trump was almost assassinated when a bullet grazed his ear at a rally for the Republican presidential nominee in Butler, Pa. The Secret Service neutralized the gunman. Sadly, the vitriol, now ubiquitous in American politics, didn’t die with the would-be murderer.
In a show of solidarity, President Joe Biden condemned the assault hours after it occurred. The day after the assault, Trump and different Republicans appropriately made public requires unity within the wake of this horrific assault on American democracy. But, the forty fifth and forty sixth presidents wouldn’t even shake arms earlier than their June 27 debate.
The final time I bear in mind our nation carefully uniting was after the horrific terrorist assaults on 9/11. It shouldn’t take the lack of 3,000 People to deliver our nation collectively or an assassination try on a former president.
Now greater than ever is the time for our nation to come back collectively, no matter political persuasion or get together. Let’s respect each other and brazenly discuss methods to compromise and make our nation a spot the place free speech is appreciated and political violence is rarely acceptable.
