EXCLUSIVE: The BBC has admitted that it was flawed to report that Reform UK celebration chief Nigel Farage had excused Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a BBC Information channel report noting a backlash in opposition to Farage’s feedback in an earlier Panorama interview, a presenter mentioned: “There’s been criticism of Nigel Farage right here within the UK for making remarks excusing President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.”
A viewer complained that this misrepresented Farage’s place. They argued that Farage, an ardent supporter of Donald Trump, had merely used the Panorama interview to restate his view that Russia had used the eastward enlargement of NATO as an excuse for navy motion in Ukraine.
The BBC’s Govt Complaints Unit (ECU) agreed: “This was not the identical as ‘excusing’ President Putin’s resolution, and that the phrasing of the introduction gave the deceptive impression that Mr Farage thought of the invasion of Ukraine to be justifiable.”
The ECU upheld the viewer’s grievance and mentioned the phrasing broke editorial guidelines. The discovering was reported to BBC Information’ board and mentioned with the programme-makers involved.
It was not the primary error made by the BBC in its protection of Farage in the course of the UK election marketing campaign. In Might, presenter Geeta Guru-Murthy mentioned Farage had used “customary inflammatory language” on immigration throughout a report on a Reform UK press convention.
