Elliot Silverstein, who directed Jane Fonda and, in an Oscar-winning efficiency, Lee Marvin within the 1965 comedy-Western Cat Ballou, died Nov. 24 in Los Angeles. He was 96.
His demise was introduced by members of the family.
Born August 3, 1927, in Boson, Silverstein launched his directing profession throughout tv’s Fifties on such packages as Omnibus and the Alfred Hitchcock-produced thriller collection Suspicion, Silverstein stayed busy with episodic collection all through the Sixties. Amongst his credit from the period: Route 66, Have Gun – Will Journey, Bare Metropolis, Dr. Kildare, The Defenders and 4 episodes of The Twilight Zone, together with the fan-favorite, Rod Serling-penned 1961 installment titled The Passersby, a mournful ghost story set on the finish of the American Civil Warfare.

Silverstein acquired the Robert B. Aldrich Achievement Award from the Administrators Guild of America in 1985 and was named an honorary life member of the DGA in 1990. Following his retirement he taught movie at USC.
Throughout his marriage to Evelyn Ward within the early Sixties, Silverstein was the stepfather of Ward’s son, pop star David Cassidy. Silverstein had two subsequent marriages.
Silverstein is survived by brother Jason. A personal service shall be held in Boston.
