To the editor: I used to be touched and just a little stunned by the phrases and tone of local weather columnist Sammy Roth’s piece on supporting a free press.

After giving us a big dose of the early writings and philosophy of Abraham Lincoln on the state of civil rights because it then existed, he modified lanes about three-quarters of the way in which by way of this stunning essay to disagree with the newspaper’s proprietor for withholding an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris because the editorial board had deliberate to do. Roth urged his (and the paper’s) readers to not cancel their subscriptions in protest of this choice.

If this “so-called” experiment in democracy is to proceed and succeed, a couple of essential establishments should proceed and succeed, together with a good and free press — which means all media. As for me personally, I don’t plan to cancel my subscription any time quickly. I’m in it for the lengthy haul.

To the editor: Roth’s article on how Lincoln may need responded to President-elect Donald Trump displays my continued dedication to maneuver ahead so as to save our democracy and our world.

Not solely is Roth trustworthy, he’s additionally courageous to specific what my household, mates and I would like for our nation: equality and respect for all, a continued battle to avoid wasting our planet, and freedom of the press. Thanks.

To the editor: Those that canceled their subscriptions gained’t see this letter or Roth’s wonderful plea for heeding the sixteenth president’s smart and prescient phrases. Maybe a good friend will ahead the article to them with a plea for them to return, as a result of we desperately want The Instances, particularly now.

I get the frustration and anger over Instances proprietor Dr. Patrick Quickly-Shiong’s choice to not endorse at a essential second. I share the frustration.

However whereas I disagree with the choice, the apologia he provided in response and his report of public service along with saving and sustaining the paper make the case for his having taken a principled place and never caving to right-wing strain.

Quickly-Shiong is a real philanthropist and the inventor of the chemotherapy that gave my spouse extra time and higher high quality of life within the face of pancreatic most cancers. Within the horrible week through which I misplaced her plus the hammer-blow of the election and a wildfire close by, my very own plea for affordable folks to return again and skim The Instances with me over morning espresso is very heartfelt.

John Phillips, Camarillo

..

To the editor: Like many Instances readers, I severely thought-about canceling my subscription after your proprietor didn’t wish to endorse a presidential candidate.

However I really like the columnists at The Instances, particularly Roth for his insights about our local weather. His column on sustaining a free press echoed and emphasised my emotions about supporting journalists in these loopy occasions.

So, I’m nonetheless subscribing.
