JERUSALEM: New armed forces chief Lieutenant Normal Eyal Zamir stated throughout his inauguration on Wednesday (Mar 5) that Israel’s mission to defeat Palestinian militant group Hamas was “not completed”.

“I settle for command of the (Israeli navy) with modesty and humility … Hamas has certainly suffered a extreme blow, however it has not but been defeated. The mission isn’t but completed,” Zamir stated, amid impasse in negotiations on subsequent steps in a ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza.

Talking earlier than Zamir on the ceremony at navy headquarters in Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed him that Israel is “decided” to realize victory within the multi-front conflict that started with Hamas’ October 2023 assault.

“A really heavy duty rests in your shoulders, the outcomes of the conflict can have significance for generations, we’re decided to realize … victory”, Netanyahu stated.
