Issue’s promoting level over different ready-to-heat meal kits has at all times been twofold. One is that its meals are pleasant to keto and different variations of high-protein and carb-conscious diets. The opposite is that its microwaveable meals have by no means been frozen, leaving open the chance for precise texture in a single’s meal—a lightweight crispness to the inexperienced beans, say. Or the grill char and mushy give of a medium-rare filet mignon.
However in previous years, these two promoting factors appeared to intervene with one another. Issue, famous my colleague Louryn Strampe in her 2024 evaluation (6/10, WIRED Evaluate), fell prey far too usually to the porridgy and cauliflower-heavy “mush-on-mush” college of carb-avoidant fare. The meals failed on texture, she wrote, in considerably extra colourful phrases.
However ever since HelloFresh purchased Issue, the menu has been slowly evolving to heartier fare with extra chew and snap. Starches now veer to potato wedges, coconut lime rice, or al dente forbidden rice. The inexperienced beans, too usually overdone even at eating places, had a shocking and welcome tautness. (One can see this evolution by taking a look at outdated menus via the magic lens of Wayback Machine.)
Over time, Issue has advanced into one of the best ready-to-heat meal supply service I’ve thus far tasted.
Mitigating Elements

However this is not to say Issue has solved the problems inherent to ready-made supply meals. There’s the fee, in fact, greater than most may afford as a full substitute for cooking: A full week of lunch and dinner for one would run about $170, with delivery.
And pre-cooked meals won’t ever fairly be nearly as good as fresh-prepared meals: It can at all times be a balancing act to keep away from the dual terrors of sogginess and rubberiness in reheated meals. And for each crisp inexperienced bean or air-fryer charred broccoli, there is a limp zoodle.
