To the editor: Protection by L.A. Instances columnist Robin Abcarian and reporter Karen Kaplan of Gus Walz illustrates how highly effective it’s for folks with disabilities to be supported within the media, on-line and in actual life. However because the mom of a 28-year-old son with extreme cerebral palsy, I concern that America’s present fascination with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s neurodivergent son is only a passing fancy.
For the sake of households like Tim’s and Gwen’s (and mine), I actually hope I’m flawed. I’d wish to imagine that each one the tweets, posts and information protection about Gus characterize a want by the media and Fundamental Road to grasp, embrace and help folks with disabilities in significant methods.
“We the folks,” not simply we the dad and mom, should advocate for and obtain higher healthcare, employment, and housing alternatives for folks with disabilities. Inclusion is created collectively.
Let’s seize the highlight and switch social media posts and media protection into progress. Our children and communities deserve it.
