KATHMANDU: Police in Nepal have detained 10 individuals they are saying charged unemployed youths large quantities of cash for journey visas, then despatched them for unlawful recruitment into the Russian military, an official stated on Wednesday (Dec 6).
Nepal requested Moscow this week to not recruit its residents into the Russian military, and to ship any Nepali soldier in its armed forces again to the Himalayan nation after six of its residents serving in Russia’s navy have been killed.
Kathmandu District Police chief Bhupendra Khatri stated 10 individuals have been in police custody after being detained over the previous few days following tip-offs.
“We’re discussing with the federal government legal professionals concerning the case and can produce them to the courtroom,” Khatri instructed Reuters. He didn’t say after they would seem in courtroom.
Khatri stated the detainees illegally charged every individual as much as US$9,000 and despatched them to Russia on “go to (vacationer) visas”, primarily via the UAE. They have been then recruited into the Russian military.
“It’s a case of human smuggling … organised crime,” Khatri added.
The detainees couldn’t be instantly reached for remark.
Nepal, which lies between China and India, has requested Russia, which invaded neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022 and has been engaged in a struggle since, to compensate the households of the Nepali residents killed.
