KATHMANDU: Nepal mentioned it has requested Moscow to not recruit its residents into the Russian military and instantly ship again any Nepali soldier commissioned there again to the Himalayan nation after revealing six troopers serving Russia’s navy had been killed.

Nepali troopers, known as Gurkhas, are recognized for his or her bravery and preventing expertise, and have been serving the British and Indian armies following the independence of India in 1947 below an settlement between the three international locations.

The small Himalayan nation, wedged between China and India, has no such settlement with Russia, which invaded neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022 and has been engaged in a conflict since.

The Nepal authorities mentioned in a press release that six of its nationals, who had been serving the Russian military, had been killed, with out offering any particulars.

“The federal government of Nepal has requested the Russian authorities to instantly return their our bodies and pay compensation to their households,” the international ministry mentioned late on Monday.

Diplomatic efforts had been underway to get one Nepali citizen serving the Russian military and captured by Ukraine launched, the assertion added. Nepal additionally urged its residents to not be a part of the military of any war-torn nation.
