To the editor: Columnist George Skelton is just too type to Gov. Gavin Newsom for gutting the California Journalism Preservation Act. (“Newsom and lawmakers bow to Google, sticking it to the information trade,” column, Aug. 26)
Within the governor’s newest turnaround, he has scuttled laws to require web giants similar to Google to pay again to information organizations a few of the billions they’ve scooped up stealing from that historic and proud occupation.
Shockingly, the tech trade continues to learn from newspaper tales it steals with out compunction. This thievery takes locations as newspapers proceed to harm throughout the nation and our democracy suffers.
Does Newsom know what Thomas Jefferson thought of newspapers? In 1787, he wrote: “The idea of our authorities being the opinion of the folks, the very first object ought to be to maintain that proper; and have been it left to me to resolve whether or not we must always have a authorities with out newspapers, or newspapers with no authorities, I shouldn’t hesitate a second to favor the latter.”
Little question that if he have been alive in the present day, newspaper writer Benjamin Franklin can be occupied writing to Newsom and lots of letters to the editor.
