To the Editor:

Re “A Jury Convicts a Teen’s Mom in His Rampage” (entrance web page, Feb. 7):

As a retired legislation enforcement officer and simply somebody with widespread sense, I’m heartened by this verdict. The dad and mom’ dereliction of their duties was past inexcusable.

I used to be raised round firearms. I used to be given my first rifle at age 6. However my father’s coaching and supervision had been, to say the very least, strict within the excessive. We wouldn’t dare even make a joke a couple of gun.

However the infatuation with weapons on this nation will proceed to wreak havoc till, in some way, we study to care extra about our children and the protection of our society than we do about weapons and the ridiculous, tortured interpretation of the anachronistic Second Modification.

Weapons are instruments. They don’t impart “manhood.”

To the Editor:

Jennifer Crumbley has been discovered responsible of 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter. From what I’ve seen, I concur with that judgment.

However nonetheless … as a father or mother, whose youngsters have by no means performed something harmful and haven’t been troubled by the identical demons that Ethan Crumbley was, I really feel some darkish disappointment for her as she faces her personal imprisonment.

I do know the decision will probably be debated, and can set a precedent about parental duty and care of firearms. I hope that it’ll actually result in change.

Whereas the mom is receiving simply punishment, she is however, maybe, questioning, as do most of us dad and mom at one time or one other, what she ought to have performed in another way.

To the Editor:

Re “What Is This Mom Actually Responsible Of?,” by Megan Okay. Stack (Opinion visitor essay, Feb. 5), revealed shortly earlier than the decision:

Ms. Stack’s essay, arguing that Ethan Crumbley’s mom, Jennifer, shouldn’t be held complicit in Ethan’s college taking pictures, shouldn’t be convincing. What father or mother would give a woefully depressed teenager a gun “to cheer him up?” If Ms. Crumbley by no means anticipated that he would change into a college shooter, wouldn’t it happen to her that Ethan would possibly die by suicide?

Ms. Crumbley ignored the college’s recommendation to take her son to a therapist. Ms. Stack quotes a lawyer saying that “it’s best to have identified higher” shouldn’t be a prison normal, however isn’t the usual right here extra “aiding and abetting,” as Ms. Crumbley enabled the taking pictures with the acquisition of the gun?

When gun producers and our legislators place nearly no restrictions on the flexibility of dysfunctional households to present their mentally in poor health members weapons as presents, new authorized methods should be discovered to discourage the epidemic of faculty shootings.

The author is a retired lawyer.

To the Editor:

It’s one factor to be an irresponsible father or mother. It’s fairly one other to be an irresponsible father or mother who buys a 15-year-old son a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun and fails to maintain that gun locked up and out of hurt’s means. Negligence on the a part of these dad and mom allowed the son to kill 4 and wound seven. They have to share the blame.

Trump and Immunity: ‘He Is Not a King’

Ira D. Cohen
North Bergen, N.J.

To the Editor:

Folks could also be puzzled by Donald Trump’s repeated and vociferous demand that presidents should have full immunity from prosecution after they go away workplace. Nonetheless, it offers a transparent window into his assumptions about energy.

For Mr. Trump, it’s inconceivable to carry workplace, or energy in any realm, with out stretching, or ignoring fully, legal guidelines pertaining to conduct. As is clear by lawsuits and indictments, Mr. Trump appears incapable of working inside authorized boundaries, in enterprise, finance, interpersonal pursuits and holding elected workplace.

He assumes that everybody operates as he does, so in fact immunity is critical as a way to get issues performed. This unconscious assumption on his half is sort of revealing about his psychology, and management posture, despite the fact that no president, besides him, has been indicted after leaving workplace.

The Failed Try and Impeach Mayorkas

To the Editor:

Re “Defections Foil G.O.P. Bid to Impeach Mayorkas” (entrance web page, Feb. 7):

What a humiliation for the rabble rousers of the Home Republican caucus: They failed, although by a slender margin, of their effort to deliver a couple of revenge impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland safety secretary.

There’s a authentic argument about whether or not Mr. Mayorkas has performed his job nicely on the immigration disaster on the Mexican border. However as a number of G.O.P. Home members had the great sense to acknowledge, impeaching Secretary Mayorkas would have been fallacious and would seemingly have been met with payback when Democrats regain management of the Home.

Former President Donald Trump was impeached twice via a considerate and bonafide course of. The Home G.O.P. under no circumstances met that normal in its vendetta towards Mr. Mayorkas. Possibly failure will trigger the members to now suppose twice earlier than selecting to make fools of themselves.

Oren Spiegler
Peters Township, Pa.

To the Editor:

Speaker Mike Johnson clearly must go to Nancy Pelosi to get a lesson on how you can “lead” with out egg in your face, as evidenced by the disastrous vote to question Alejandro Mayorkas. She famously mentioned she by no means put a vote to the ground she couldn’t win.

Mr. Johnson, Donald Trump’s puppet, clearly couldn’t determine that out for himself. Time to ask Ms. Pelosi for assist, or his days as speaker are numbered.

To the Editor:

Re “Trump’s Working Mate Has to Be Ramaswamy,” by Frank Bruni (Opinion, Feb. 3):

Mr. Bruni’s piece positing Vivek Ramaswamy as Donald Trump’s selection for a operating mate was very a lot on the right track, but it surely omitted probably the most compelling cause for this selection: a Vice President Ramaswamy can be an unbelievable insurance coverage coverage towards Democrats making an attempt to question Mr. Trump if he’s elected.

Kari Lake comes shut, however Mr. Ramaswamy is in means over his head on the nationwide stage. He doesn’t have a clue.
