The Security Cease invoice (Senate Invoice 6208) was signed into legislation by Gov. Jay Inslee and went into impact on Oct. 1, 2020. This legislation permits bicyclists to deal with cease indicators as yield indicators. But three full years later, many drivers aren’t conscious of this legislation. I do know this as a result of many of those uninformed individuals have advised me that I have to cease whereas driving my bicycle regardless that I’ve complied with the yield necessities.

It’s disappointing how little effort is made by the state of Washington to tell drivers of latest legal guidelines. The state has all our addresses and a renewal course of for driver’s licenses. Why this info and course of just isn’t utilized to higher educate drivers on modifications in legislation is past me.

A letter to the editor isn’t an sufficient substitute for a extra formal communication course of, however it’s a option to inform some extra drivers concerning the Security Cease legislation. The bicycling neighborhood is conscious of the legislation, however too many drivers aren’t.

To reiterate, bicyclists in Washington don’t have to cease when it’s protected to journey by an intersection.
