The US State Division says Russia’s RT community has ‘moved past being a media outlet’ and has cyber-capabilities.

The US has issued new sanctions towards Russia’s state media outlet RT, accusing the tv community of participating in covert “affect and intelligence operations” world wide and weapons procurement for the Russian army.

In a assertion on Friday, the US State Division mentioned RT — beforehand generally known as Russia Immediately — had “moved past being merely a media outlet and has been an entity with cyber capabilities”.

“It’s also engaged in data operations, covert affect, and army procurement. These operations are focusing on international locations world wide, together with in Europe, Africa, and North and South America.”

Friday’s announcement comes amid years of strained relations between the US and Russia over the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.

The administration of US President Joe Biden — a staunch critic of his Russia counterpart, Vladimir Putin — has issued waves of sanctions towards Russian people and corporations for the reason that warfare started in 2022.

RT has created web sites posing as reputable information websites to unfold disinformation and propaganda in Europe, Africa, South America and elsewhere, officers mentioned.
