Mass protests erupted in New Caledonia this week after France’s parliament voted to permit French residents who’ve lived within the Pacific Islands territory for 10 years or extra to vote in provincial elections.
The French authorities has argued that these reforms uphold democracy within the archipelago. However native individuals – notably these from the Indigenous Kanak neighborhood, who make up 40 % of the islands’ inhabitants – concern this may undermine their efforts to win independence from France.
