Mary Weiss, the previous lead singer of the Sixties pop lady group The Shangri-Las, died Friday at 75 years previous. Her dying was confirmed by her husband, who supplied no particulars.
The group was made up of two units of sisters, Mary and Betty Weiss, and twins Marge and Mary Ann Ganser, who shaped within the Queens borough of New York Metropolis.
Mary Weiss was the lead singer, singing about teenage love and tragedy on such hits as “Bear in mind (Strolling within the Sand)” and “Chief of the Pack.” The latter was written by George “Shadow” Morton, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, and have become a No. 1 pop hit in 1964.
“Remembering Mary Weiss with a lot love and affection. Mary was the last word,” Miriam Linna, who runs Norton Data, Weiss’ report label, mentioned in a submit on Fb.
By 1968, the Shangri-Las disbanded due to litigation, a topic that Weiss mentioned she was prevented from discussing even many years later.
She returned to music in 2007 with a debut solo album Harmful Recreation, and appeared on the South by Southwest in Austin.
