I agree with Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Berkeley College of Regulation, and Howard Gillman, chancellor of UC Irvine and regulation professor, concerning the want for universities to return to the rules of free speech.
Until the speech constitutes harassment or one other crime, or targets a selected particular person, it must be protected. Censorship will not be the reply to vile, bigoted or ignorant speech. The reply is extra speech, extra debate, extra variety of concepts.
Free speech and public discourse are foundational to a functioning democracy.
