Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (Could 12) moved to exchange defence minister Sergei Shoigu in a serious shake-up to Russia’s army management greater than two years into its Ukraine offensive.

Putin proposed economist Andrey Belousov as Shoigu’s alternative, based on an inventory of the ministerial nominations revealed by the Federation Council, Russia’s higher home of parliament.

Putin concurrently revealed decrees naming Shoigu as the brand new secretary of the Safety Council, changing long-standing Putin ally Nikolai Patrushev.

“Shoigu will proceed to work on this sector (defence), which he is aware of nicely,” state media quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

“He is aware of it very nicely from the within, collectively along with his colleagues and companions at his earlier place of job,” he added.

Putin is constitutionally required to call a brand new set of presidency ministers – or reappoint current ones – following his victory in a March election devoid of opposition.

Lawmakers in Russia’s rubber-stamp parliament have to approve the president’s nominations, which they’re set to do on Tuesday.
